1961년 뉴욕에서 결성된 3인조 혼성트리오로서 싱어송라이터인 Peter Yarrow, 브로드웨이 싱어인 Mary Travers 그리고 가수이자 코메디언인 Noel Paul Stookey 로 구성된 포크 그룹이다. 내면적이고 서정적인 포크뮤직을 주도했으며 인권과 반전이라는 기본적인 성향에다  감미로운 멜로디와 화음, 맑고 서정적인 분위기로 대단한 인기를 누렸다. 이곡은 대니보이와 같이 아일랜드 민요이며, 사랑하는 사람을 전쟁터로 보내고 그 사람을 그리워하는 가사로서 反戰的 분위기를 표현하고 있다.
